Mrs Houdini A Novel Victoria Kelly Books

Unequivocal praise for and recommendation of this historical novel. Historical novels are not usually on my radar since I prefer non-fiction. The only other historical novel I read before Victoria’s was Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow, and that was published in 1975. However Victoria is a fellow poet whom I met at a reading of her poems, and I am so glad that I got the opportunity to read her first novel. Victoria’s story about Bess Houdini is poetic, psychological, mystical, and creates vivid pictures in your mind of the eras involved (1899 to 1929, primarily) and the compelling characters that Mrs. Houdini meets along her journey through life with her famous husband. Her writing style is like silk, smooth and elegant. And it is seemingly effortless. But as a writer myself, I know that getting to that kind of silkiness and effortlessness requires hard work. She also asks the question that Mary Higgins Clark, whom I met several years ago, said she always asks when she imagines a story: “What if?” That question loomed large when Victoria set out to write a novel about Harry Houdini’s wife. Like the magic that Houdini was a master at, I will not reveal the plot, but I will leave the magic of this enthralling story for you to discover from the masterful pen of Victoria Kelly.

Mrs Houdini A Novel Victoria Kelly Books Reviews

An interesting book about gbe Houdinis, clearly well researched. The struggle of Houdini's wife to reach him, and his fictional message to her were creative and sometimes moving. All that having been said, sometimes tbe characters did not seem lifelike to me.
Houdini, the magician, was well-known, yet his wife Bess, who was by his side, was not usually considered as significant. This novel is placed in a historical setting, accurate to the times in which they lived. My favorite part was observing the relationship between the Houdinis. The author, admittedly, used some poetic license , and I really enjoyed it; weaving in facts with sentiment made for an easy read.
The book has an interesting perspective on the lives of the Houdinis. It tells the story of their marriage and her devotion to Harry. At the same time it also tells the story of her attempt to contact Harry after his death. It is a story of total devotion-Harry to his craft and Bess to her husband.
the story is better than the story-telling...
As someone who knows virtually nothing about Harry Houdini and his life, I found this book fascinating. The story is of Bess, the vaudeville performer who marries Harry. The story is told in two time lines--one from when Bess marries Harry and the second of Bess's attempts to contact Harry after his death. I have no idea where the line between fact and fiction lies in this novel, nor did I care, because the story is gripping and I read this quite quickly. A terrifically interesting novel.
I have been interested in Houdini ever since the movie Houdini, starring Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis came out in the mid fifties. I loved the movie, and (in the old days), looked him up in the encyclopedia to find out more about him. This book is wonderful, as it does reveal a very interesting life story and also the love story between him and his wife. I was also a fan of magic and the fact that he promised to come back to his wife after death if it was at all possible was so interesting, this book tells a wonderful story and just knowing that it is about people who really lived, made it all the more enjoyable.
What a gift Victoria Kelly gave us with this immaculately researched re-imagining of the incomparable Houdini, the world's most renown magician and escape artist. And from the unique perspective of his wife, Bess. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the story this way, up close and personal, instead of a biography. I particularly loved how Victoria handled the time after Houdini died... I won't reveal the end, but it really created resonance with me, leaving me wanting the Houdinis to live on! As they do in this stellar novel, Mrs. Houdini...
