Chinese Handcuffs Chris Crutcher Books Reviews
This is a thoughtful book for teens that is similar to the writings of Paul Zindel (The Pigman).
The colorfully named Jennifer Lawless and Dillon Hemingway are two high-schoolers who are each struggling with a deep dark secret that belies the calm faces they show to their teachers and peers. Dillon is haunted by the memory of his brother, who shot himself in front of Dillon. Jennifer is living with a child-molesting monster, and she fears that his attention will soon be transplanted from herself to her younger sister, Dawn.
Parts of the book are letters that Dillon writes to his dead brother, which gives us some interesting first-person narrative, and also reminds us of the depth to which Dillon is affected by the death.
Another nice thing is that both Jennifer and Dillon are hardcore student-athletes, which is a little different from the steretypical outcast who is usually featured in books for teens. This might make the book a little more attractive to the non-bookworms out there who are willing to give a serious book a shot.
Overall, I recommend this book. It's thoughtful, exciting in parts, well-written, and interesting. The characters are not as in-depth as they could have been, which limits the level of emotional connection we can feel to them, but they aren't half bad, either.
Book Review 4
My book I was reading was called Chinese Handcuffs and let's just get into it. The book was not all I expected because of the title, and you won't understand it until you get a couple of chapters in really. It is hard to understand but at the same time it makes complete sense you just have to risk the read because it is really good. If you really enjoy books with a lot of action, drama, plot, and scary/chilli feel Read This. Some points i wanted to cry and others i got mad at the same time i keep read and it is worth it completely. The plot is full and in a good way to be honest. The plot doesn't have a hole at all to my opinion and the foreshadowing is brilliant and makes you hope and wonder that you are right but at the same time you don't know so you wait and it is just whoa sometimes. But if you can read about rape, Suicide, drugs, And just sadness do read this but it does have a ending out of amazement. I'm so happy i got to read this but at the same time it's hard to read at points and it can be challenge. I hope you read this book it's worth it and enjoy. But the one thing I did not like was the ending and you'll have to read it to find out.
Book Review about Chinese Hand Cuffs By Brandon Lane
Looking at the title Chinese Handcuffs, I never would have expected such an ongoing book of every day, life-threatening events. I would have to say that the main idea I got from this book was communication. Communication is a key to life and in this book you find out the consequences of communicating and not communicating in life and death situations.
I enjoyed this book a lot. Its life lessons and relations to true stories really made me think of what I would do in the situations Dillon had in his hands. Dillon Hemingways' life is much like a carnival, full of excitement and secrets, some to be told and some to have kept quiet.
Starting out with his brothers' suicidal death, Dillon had many hardships and adventures to go through right from the beginning. He had to find someone to talk to and he had to keep his active life in school, out of trouble. I would have never guessed such a huge story could one relate to a carnival and two like a carnival trick toy, Chinese handcuffs.
This book is right. Sometimes to get out of tough situations like Chinese handcuffs, you have to do the opposite of what you think.
If you like a book full of suspense and wonder, pick this book up and join me in not wanting to put it down. Chris Crutcher does a great job of detailing this book and that is one reason it's so good, so five stars off to him. It's an excellent book.
Unfortunately, despite this book having been written 23 years ago, its subject mater hasn’t gotten old and is still relevant today.
Dillon, team trainer for his high school girl’s basketball team and fledgling triathlete, watched his older brother commit suicide. Told through letters to Dillon’s brother, as well as through flashbacks, Crutcher tells the story of Jen – sexually abused by her father, then her stepfather, since she was 5 years old. Now 18, and a star basketball player, she has reached a crossroads. By trying to protect her younger sister from the same fate, her stepfather has boxed her into a corner where she can only see one way out for herself.
Determined not to have what happened to his brother happen to anyone else on his watch, Dillon tries to figure out how he can help Jen escape from a psychopath who is not beyond murdering those who get in his way. Crutcher weaves together the pain in their lives to depict an emotional storyline, combined with hope, that will resonate with teens going through similar experiences who may seek help for themselves.
Contains mature subject matter. I’d recommend it for grades 10-12.
It really is an amazing read, it's very real and vivid but it's not a book for everyone since there are some content people might not enjoy.
I bought this book for my son for school and he loves it. But, I was not happy about having to wait a month to receive it! He had to read someone else's copy of it.
Really good read!
