I was excited when I saw that S.E. Smith had released a new Kassis book. But for the first time in . . . well, ever . . . I was bored reading one of her books. It pains me to say that because she is my favorite author, but reviews are meant to be fair and objective so I have to stick with the two-star rating. (It took me two days to read it, because I kept putting my Kindle down and wondering off because it didn't hold my interest). In the beginning, I found Risteard to be somewhat cold and one-dimensional, and Ricki was just odd (and I don't mean in an endearing way). Mostly I was just irritated with the way they interacted. He was a high-handed, arrogant jerk and Ricki was aloof and acted very dense (several times he told her she was his empress, and she somehow takes that to mean that getting together with him was a one time thing and that she wasn't really that special to him). And he's so inept, that he has her in tears instead of just telling her point blank that he would forsake all all others because she was his "one". And then he keeps calling her his "empress" like he expects that to make her happy, but I didn't get the impression that that kind of thing would be her cup of tea. In fact, I thought that given her personality, she wouldn't want all the pomp that came with being an empress, so it just felt like he didn't really even know her at all. The story started to pick up in the last quarter of the book-- but then the story ends. I would have liked this book more if the author had included even a brief epilogue. Readers don't really get to see the couple grow closer together or anything and they're left to wonder how the relationship worked out long-term.
I really don't understand why this book has so many high reviews. It's not a bad book, but it certainly isn't as good as the author's other books. Overall, if you're an S.E. Smith fan, I think you will probably find this book worth reading. If you're not necessarily an S.E. Smith fan, you could probably skip this one.

Really hoping the next book in this series is released soon but it looks like it may be a "dead" series. Wish I would have realized that before I spend all that money buying all the books since they aren't included in kindle unlimited. So...no new releases in years plus only available off you want to buy them. They should be part of Unlimited!. Don't make us pay for the abandoned series. Show you appreciate your customers! The overall story builds on each new book so we are left hanging
Ricki the adopted daughter of Walter & Nema (they own the circus) & Risteard (The Grand Ruler) are the mates in this story. Ricki unbeknownst to her, Walter & Nema is 1/2 human & 1/2 Glacian; Ricki & her biological father (Rime, who you meet later in this book had fallen in love with a human who was later killed after Ricki had been born & because he couldn't take her with him he had given her to Walter & Nema for safe keeping) are the key to saving Risteard's home planet. Risteard 1st sees Ricki in book 3 & he immediately knows that she's his but waits almost a month before kidnapping her & she puts up a fight when he does & injures him many times on his ship before they get to his home planet which just makes him fall for her even more. The traitor winds up being one of Risteard's closest friends however you don't know that until the end. This book was excellent as it had all of my favorite elements to a book a good vs bad element, lots of sex scenes, fast-paced action & hot sexy Aliens. I hope that Ms. Smith continues to write about the characters in this series.
The series continues with Ricky and Ristèard story. Ricky is the adopted daughter of Walter and Nema, the owners of the circus. When she meets Ristèard she starts feeling things that she never have felt before for another man. He kidnaps her, because of a prophecy found recently in an underground city that talks about a returned empress that will save his people. Read the book to follow them in an adventure that is full of danger, love, betrayal and loyalty.
I don't know why some people gave this book a low review. I love the dinamic of the characters and the intricacies of their relationship.
I hope that Mrs. Smith continues this series with Jarmen's Jane Doe, the next book in this series and the story of Ajaska and Katerina.
Jarmen and the Red Spaceship are mention in another of her series "Dagger's hope the Alliance book 3" where he is trying to find Jane and he stops where Dagger and Jordan are trying to fix their ship to ask for directions in finding Earth.
