I'm always confused and irritated when a good idea and good writing is spoiled by the story line fading and only a nod towards historical accuracy. That seems to me a waste of talent. A book that could have been a keeper will be erased from my Kindle. The impossible heroine is at seventeen behaving like there are no rules in the society she lives in. The hero's disregard of the same rules and disloyalty to his friend is explained away with his ideas of his parent's marriage, a poor excuse. The idea of a supposedly innocent overruling her teacher and chaperon, wearing strong color, (burgundy, suitable for older ladies and, of course the light brigade) and extravagant jewels and make up at her first dining in Society is horrible. The chaperon is doing a thoroughly poor job and no one notices. The passionate lovers imagining themselves undetected when there were always servants around. Really! And then imagining that an adoption(regardless of his parentage, he was born before their marriage) would make a child heir to a duchy, I think that would be possible only if they had no more children and through an Act of Parliament. So,no, no, no, no. Sly winks and lots of steamy sex does not save this story that end up being no more than that. I becomes only titillating fluff, and to me a waste of time.Tags : The Hellion and The Heartbreaker - Kindle edition by Jennifer McNare. The Hellion and The Heartbreaker edition by Jennifer McNare Romance eBooks Reviews
I really loved the beginning of this book. Scarlett (I don't think the name fit the time period) was a red-haired, horse mad tomboy being raised by four older brothers. At age 12, she was used to getting whatever she wanted from them. When she found out that a stallion that she wanted was actually going to be given to the Duke of Worthe, she was furious. Alec, the Duke of Worthe, is the best friend of Scarlett's older brother. He can't believe that the young hellion had the nerve to bite him and kick him in the shins. Two years after that disastrous confrontation, Scarlett meets Alec again and, after Scarlett's apology, they get along well. So far, so good. I'm liking the story. Shortly before Scarlett's 18th birthday, Alec visits his old friend again. *****************SPOILERS AHEAD**************The innocent Scarlett is able to use her seductive wiles to seduce the London rake. This is easily accomplished since her brothers are in one wing of the house and Scarlett is alone in the other wing, with Alec's bedroom door right across the hall. *sigh* I know, I know. OF COURSE that is how it was done in that era, right? Using tips from the stable master's daughter, Scarlett convinces the man-about-town that she knows what she is doing and he gives in with only a few whimpers. Their affair continues in London because he conveniently has a house next door with a secret gate between the back gardens. She is able to LEAVE her house every night and go to HIS house and no servants catch on? Oh, shoot me now. When he dumps her, she finds out she is pregnant, finds a way to have her child and return as a widow. The fact that the child looks EXACTLY like his father totally escapes her dullard brothers and only Alec himself and one of her suitors ever catches on. Right. He marries her and adopts the child. Okay, that is possible. However, the adopted child would NOT be in line to inherit the Dukedom, even though he was the biological son of the Duke. NOT possible. ******************END SPOILERS************* This story is short on plot and historical accuracy and long on sex. And, it was boring. I thought I would never finish it.
The Hellion and the Heartbreaker is one of the Best Historical Romance stories I have read in a long time. The book is a keeper and I look forward to re reading it many times. Jennifer McNare the author has written the perfect H/H Scarlett McPhearson is the perfect beautiful, rich, intelligent, smart virginal Character. Alex Weston Duke of Worthe is also written perfectly tall, dark, very handsome, very rich and powerful Duke. The only thing is at times I felt like hitting Alex over the head because of his views on love and the nonchalant way he treated Scarlett after there infamous affair. She was only 18 and he was about 28 they had know each other since childhood and he still walked away from the love of his life. But they do get there HEA 3 years later and they have a beautiful son together named Oliver. At times I didn't know if Alex would ever find out about his son, but toward the end he did. I loved the ending of this wonderful love story. I especially loved Scarlett's courage. The Epilogue was wonderful too. She was so brave and her brothers were jus wonderful characters too. I don't think these characters could have been written any better. This is what I call a Perfectly Written HR and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read it. Truly a page turner for me. I Highly Recommend The Hellion and The Heartbreaker for your reading pleasure. I hope we get stories for some of the other characters mentioned in the story!!
